Traditional journalism has been facing challenges in the digital age due to disruptions caused by big tech companies. However, some tech giants are now positioning themselves as saviors of journalism through initiatives like the Google News Initiative. These programs promise to not only keep journalism alive but also to help it thrive by fostering innovation. Many media organizations, especially smaller ones, have welcomed this financial and technical support as it can be life-changing for cash-strapped newsrooms. However, the increasing dependency on big tech for funding raises concerns about press independence.
The relationship between big tech and journalism is particularly significant in countries in the Global South, where such funding can have a substantial influence due to factors like political instability, limited funding, and a lack of media literacy. A study conducted in Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East revealed that many news organizations in these regions struggle to sustain technological projects funded by initiatives like the Google News Initiative. While some projects show promise initially, financial and technical challenges often hinder their long-term success.
Many news organizations in the Global South face difficulties in implementing new technologies due to resource constraints and a lack of expertise. This can lead to a cycle of dependency on external funding and support. Additionally, outsourcing technical development to foreign companies and individuals raises concerns about digital colonialism and limits the empowerment of local newsrooms. The inability to attract and retain tech talent internally poses further challenges for these organizations.
While some projects funded by big tech initiatives have been successful in achieving long-term sustainability, many others struggle and are ultimately discontinued. Google’s promotion of technological innovation in media serves its own interests, as it fosters goodwill while potentially avoiding direct payments to news publishers. News organizations must prioritize building direct relationships with their audiences and staying informed about regulatory developments to reduce reliance on third-party platforms and preserve their independence.
To enhance its contribution to journalism, Google should expand its funding criteria to support a more diverse range of news organizations over an extended period. Support should not be limited to technological innovations but should also encompass newsroom operations and other journalistic projects. News organizations must actively participate in policy discussions shaping the news-tech relationship to ensure that technological advancements do not compromise their independence. Embracing technology is essential for the survival of journalism, but it should not come at the cost of newsroom autonomy.
