Dusan Licina, an engineer at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, has led research into the emissions from common personal care products and their behavior in indoor settings. The resulting findings suggest that while many chemicals might be considered benign, they have the potential to form secondary pollutants that could find their way into the air we breathe.

The presence of ozone—a molecule created from reactions between sunlight and outdoor pollutants—further complicates the picture. Even in the absence of ozone-generating equipment commonly found in office settings, ozone can seep in through open windows and ventilation systems. Unlike the oxygen we breathe, ozone has three oxygen atoms, making it a reactive substance capable of forming harmful compounds when it interacts with VOCs from personal care products.

In a series of controlled experiments, Licina’s team evaluated how these items behave both in isolation and under ozone exposure. The results were alarming—almost all products released particulates that could coalesce into ultrafine particles capable of infiltrating our lungs. This is particularly troubling given the increasing body of research pointing to the adverse health effects associated with fine particulate matter, which can linger in the air and accumulate in our bodies during everyday activities like applying deodorant or spritzing perfume.

While the research indicates that we might be inadvertently creating a sort of indoor smog each time we apply these products, the long-term health implications remain largely underexplored. Licina underscores the need for further toxicological studies to uncover the true extent to which these pollutants could impact our health, particularly with regard to the delicate region near our breathing zones.

The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated; continuous exposure to indoor pollution, compounded by the use of personal care items, calls for a reevaluation of our reliance on these products. The lifestyle choices we make in the name of convenience or beauty might not only affect our well-being but also carry hidden environmental consequences.

In light of these revelations, it is imperative that consumers begin to explore alternatives to conventional personal care products. Opting for natural agents that boast low chemical reactivity and prioritize environmental safety will not only benefit individual health but also contribute positively towards reducing indoor air pollution.
