AI language models, such as ChatGPT, have become increasingly popular in recent years as they continue to evolve and adapt to meet users’ needs. However, a recent study conducted by a team of AI researchers has shed light on a disturbing aspect of these models – covert racism.

The study, published in the journal Nature, reveals that popular LLMs exhibit covert racism against individuals who speak African American English (AAE). The researchers trained these models on samples of AAE text and prompted them with questions about the user to gauge their responses. Surprisingly, the results exposed a troubling bias in the language models.

While efforts have been made by the makers of LLMs to filter out overtly racist responses, the study found that covert racism still persists. Covert racism manifests in the form of negative stereotypes and assumptions. When prompted with AAE text, the LLMs responded with derogatory adjectives such as “dirty,” “lazy,” “stupid,” or “ignorant,” in stark contrast to the positive adjectives used for standard English text.

The implications of these findings are significant, especially considering that LLMs are being utilized for tasks such as screening job applicants and police reporting. The presence of covert racism in these models raises concerns about equity and fairness in decision-making processes that rely on AI technology.

Moving forward, it is clear that more work needs to be done to address and eliminate racism from LLM responses. This involves not only identifying and removing biased algorithms but also examining the underlying data sources and training methods to ensure a more inclusive and unbiased AI ecosystem.

The study highlights the urgent need to confront racism within AI language models. As these technologies continue to play a growing role in various aspects of society, it is essential to prioritize ethical considerations and strive for fairness and equity in their development and deployment. Only by addressing these issues head-on can we ensure a more just and inclusive future for AI technology.
