Despite the disruption of LockBit and other networks earlier this year, experts warn of a resurgence in cybercrimes with the emergence of new groups. These groups, while relatively new, are already showing signs of increased aggression by considering threats of physical violence in addition to online intimidation. The possibility of using stolen personal information, like addresses of senior executives, as leverage in negotiations is a troubling trend that some of these newer gangs seem to be adopting.
Allan Liska, a cybersecurity expert, coined the term “violence as a service” to describe the shift towards physical threats within cybercrime tactics. He points out that the threat of real-world harm to victims or their families could be used as a tool to escalate negotiations. With the proliferation of new cybercrime groups post-LockBit takedown, the reliance on such tactics seems to be on the rise, signaling a dangerous evolution in the cybercrime landscape.
