China’s AI sector showcased a remarkable level of confidence at a major fair in Shanghai, signaling its determination to overcome the restrictions imposed by the Western nations. Companies at the event unveiled cutting-edge products developed by a burgeoning pool of young talent, highlighting the rapid expansion of the country’s generative AI industry. According to the United Nations, China has emerged as the leading filer of patents for AI software in recent years, encompassing a wide array of applications from illustrations to computer code.
During the World AI Conference in Shanghai, exhibitors went all out to demonstrate the capabilities of generative AI products. Visitors were treated to a display of realistic “watercolors” and sci-fi-themed illustrations produced by advanced software. The growth of China’s AI talent pool in recent years has positioned the country at the forefront of AI research and development. Data from a global AI tracker indicate that China boasted nearly half of the world’s top AI researchers in 2022, showcasing a significant increase from previous years. Despite challenges posed by Western restrictions, Chinese companies remain resilient and are expanding their operations both domestically and internationally. A speech by Li Qiang, a high-ranking official in China, at the commencement of the conference underscored the country’s unwavering dedication to AI technology.
